It’s already late in the evening. I didn’t think Mom would have me working all day, but I guess she needs my help since my dads are out.

I finish eating my dinner and go to my room. After a few hours, my wolf is restless and so am I.

“I need to get out.” My wolf paces back and forth.

“Me too.” I get up from my bed and make my way downstairs.

“Mom,” I call out but get no answer. She’s probably already sleeping.

I open and close the door softly to avoid waking her. If she hears me leaving, she’s going to get weird again and try to come with me. I’ve been dying for a run by myself, and as I near the edge of our property, I take a deep breath and let it out.

Finally! I get to run by myself. I have so many pent-up emotions. I’m frustrated, angry, sad, and lost.

I’m in the middle of undressing and eyeing the stretch of land before me when light footsteps sound behind me. I quickly turn toward the noise, expecting my mom to be there with another excuse for why I can’t go out on my own.

“Tyler,” A smooth voice calls out.

A strange man stands before me with pale skin and bright red eyes, and when the wind shifts, I smell his familiar stench. He’s a vampire. “Can I help you?”

“What the fuck does this guy want. He’s ruining our time.” My wolf paces again.

“It’s what I can do to help you.” He’s got a knowing glint in his eye.

“Look, man, I’m not in the mood. If you have something to say just spill it. I don’t have time for this shit.” I came here to decompress, not to fight, although a fight doesn’t sound half bad.

“My name is Silas, and I’m with the council. It’s been very hard to reach you. Your family has been glued to your side at every turn.” Now I’m intrigued. “You don’t belong here, Tyler, but I think you already know that.”

My wolf rolls his eyes as I try not to laugh.

“So what do you want, Silas?” I take a step closer to him. I’m not afraid of a brawl, and if that’s what he came for, I’ll give it to him. If my family has been trying to keep this guy from me, there has to be a good reason.

“If you come to work for us, you’ll have a place to belong. We can use your skills to protect our supernatural community. You’ll have lots of money and can start a new life wherever you want.”

This deal sounds too good to be true. “What do I have to do for you guys?”

“You kill whoever harms our supernatural community. We’ll send you on missions all around the world.” A feeling low in my gut says it’s something more than that, but I’m at the point where I need to leave this place. I can’t stand another day of the Betas living their lives as if I don’t exist and my parents obsessing over everything I do.
